City of Long Beach PD-30 Downtown Plan Update
Firm: Gruen Associates
Client: City of Long Beach
Year: On-going
The City aims to build on the remarkable success of the Downtown Plan (PD-30) by developing an updated Specific Plan that addresses the evolving needs of the community for future decades. This update will enhance flexibility, ensuring that the plan can adapt to changing development trends while remaining compliant with State law. It will be a self-contained and comprehensive framework designed to accommodate the creation of 10,000 additional residential units by 2045, thereby fostering growth and revitalization in the area.
The new Specific Plan will align with recent policy changes in the Land Use Element and the newly adopted Housing Element, as well as other City planning documents and relevant State regulations. This strategic alignment will promote coherence and facilitate effective implementation of the plan’s objectives.
Jongmi served as the Junior Urban Designer, contributing to a clear, community-driven vision that emphasizes the importance of a cohesive and connected Downtown community. The vision focuses on creating a unique sense of place, incorporating compatible and complementary uses that enhance the vibrancy and livability of the area. Through this collaborative approach, the City seeks to ensure that the Downtown remains a thriving hub for residents and visitors alike.
