Hello! I’m Jongmi Kagabo

I recently embarked on a new role as an Urban Designer at Kimley-Horn, where I am helping to launch and grow the firm’s new urban design practice. In this role, I am focused on leading design initiatives that prioritize sustainable, equitable, and vibrant communities, drawing from my experiences at Gruen and my academic background in urban planning and design.

Prior to Kimley-Horn, I joined Gruen Associates in July 2022 as a Junior Urban Designer/Junior Planner. Shortly after, I had the opportunity to present my thesis project at the AIA|LA’s 7th Annual Design for Dignity Conference, where I participated in a panel discussing community land trusts. My research, conducted under the guidance of Professor Marlon Boarnet, Chair of the USC Sol Price School of Public Policy, explored the implementation of a community land trust as part of my project, “BioVille.” This ambitious mixed-use community was proposed for the LA River Taylor Yard G2 Parcel. Since joining Gruen, I’ve contributed to significant projects, including the recently approved City of Chino Civic Center Master Plan, the Envision Simi Valley Specific Plans, the Long Beach Downtown Plan Update, SANDAG Cross Border Trolly, and various transportation and transit initiatives.

I gained insight into Los Angeles policies during my internship at the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce and served as a GIS consultant in an independent role at the Coalition for Responsible Community Development (CRCD). I also participated in the ULI Hines Student Competition in January 2022. Before attending graduate school, I worked at the Mission of Rwanda to the United Nations as an advisor and administrative assistant. I hold a degree in Business and French from Drew University in Madison, New Jersey, which included a year abroad in France. This experience helped me visualize sustainable communities in contrast to my upbringing in the Philippines.

My dedication to urban design is rooted in my multicultural background as a Rwandese-Filipino-Korean American born in Zambia. Early exposure to global challenges and organizations addressing critical societal issues has shaped my perspective. My passion for the environment and healthy living was further solidified by my unique experiences at the UNGA74 climate summit, where I personally escorted Rwanda’s Minister of Environment to high-level meetings and provided guidance to the Rwandan Ambassador on the country’s agendas during the summit.
